مفهوم رفتار عقلایی برای علم اقتصاد و توضیح آن درباره سازوکار (مکانیسم) بازار و تعادل عمومی اهمیت اساسی دارد. از سوی دیگر، بین محدودیت عقلانیت و ایده یادگیری از خطا ارتباط منطقی وجود دارد. این مقاله با توضیح مفهوم رفتار عقلایی در اقتصاد نئوکلاسیکی و ارتباط آن با فرضیه انتظارات عقلایی به دو پرسش پاسخ می ‏دهد: آیا یادگیری از خطا نقشی در مفهوم نئوکلاسیکی رفتار عقلایی دارد؟ اگر نه، آیا ایده یادگیری از خطا می ‏تواند کمکی به توسعه مفهوم رفتار عقلایی در علم اقتصاد کند؟ برای پاسخ به این پرسش ‏ها، معنای انتخاب عقلایی که در اقتصاد نئوکلاسیکی طرح شده و نقدهایی که بر آن توسط نظریه ‏های انتخاب تحت شرایط نااطمینانی و اقتصاد رفتاری وارد شده است، مورد بررسی قرار می‏ گیرند. سپس، استفاده عقلایی از اطلاعات و ارتباط آن با مفهوم رفتار عقلایی مطرح می‏ شود و مسئله یادگیری از خطا در این چارچوب مورد واکاوی قرار می‏ گیرد. در نهایت، نظریه عقلانیت پوپر به عنوان «باز بودن به نقد» و یادگیری از خطا در قالب حدس و ابطال مطرح می ‏گردد و از نقدهای دو اقتصاددان اتریشی، یعنی هایک و کریزنز، درباره مفهوم نئوکلاسیکی رفتار عقلایی برای تفهیم این مطلب که نظریه عقلانیت پوپر می ‏تواند معنای رفتار عقلایی را در علم اقتصاد توسعه دهد، بهره گرفته می ‏شود.
